Hakkoda Backcountry Private Day Guiding
|
Hakkoda is one of Japan’s great backcountry skiing destinations – a wild, snow-covered volcanic mountain range in northern Honshu known for enormous snowfall, deep powder, famous “snow monster” trees, and expansive terrain.
Unlike a conventional ski resort, Hakkoda revolves around a single ropeway that provides access to a huge variety of backcountry terrain across the mountain. The ropeway does much of the climbing for you, but reaching the best terrain typically involves traversing, hiking or touring before dropping into long powder runs through open alpine terrain and forests. Depending on the route, a single descent can take anywhere from around 30 minutes to well over an hour. Hakkoda is particularly rewarding for experienced skiers and snowboarders because of the combination of deep snow, relatively low skier traffic and the sheer amount of terrain accessible from the ropeway. It is a place where quality matters more than simply racking up lift-accessed runs. |

It is also a mountain where local knowledge is extremely important. Hakkoda is notorious for rapidly changing weather and poor visibility, and its backcountry includes complex terrain, deep tree wells, avalanche exposure and volcanic hazards. Route finding can be difficult even for experienced backcountry skiers.
Our Hakkoda days are led by a local Japanese guide with decades of experience skiing and guiding these mountains. He is certified through Hakkoda’s local guiding system and is authorized to professionally guide in the Hakkoda area. This local qualification and, more importantly, decades spent learning the mountain provide the kind of intimate knowledge that makes a huge difference at Hakkoda – knowing where to go, how to move around the mountain efficiently, and where the best skiing is likely to be on any particular day. Rather than requiring you to join a longer tour, our Hakkoda guiding can be booked one day at a time, making it easy to add a professionally guided Hakkoda backcountry day to your own Aomori ski trip. |
