Where to ski in Iwate
Iwate has a lot of ski options, the pros/cons of which are meticulously detailed in the chart below. Here are some general pointers:
- If you're looking for a high end "resort feel" your only option in this region is skiing at Appi Kogen. Since being purchased by a Chinese buyer, there has been a significant uptick in skiers from China, but they mostly stick to the groomers and lower lifts and so don't really affect the more advanced terrain.
- Geto Kogen gets massive amounts of snow. It occasionally makes the national list of the snowiest resorts in all of Japan, out-snowing both Niseko and Hakuba areas.
- Amihari, Shimokura, Tazawako and Shizukuishi have some great backcountry options, but don't attempt backcountry without doing plenty of research or get a guide as there are lots of deep gullies and of course avalanche hazards.
