Where to stay in Iwate

As a convenient entry point for exploring Tohoku, Iwate offers any kind of accommodation you can think of, ranging from basic hostels to luxury resorts, from central business hotels to remote mountain Ryokan (traditional Japanese Inn's). There's an option for whatever accommodation you're looking for. Below is a list of a few of our recommended accommodations and a map.

Hachimantai Mountain Hotel

  • Fantastic Onsen hot springs on-site
  • Free shuttle bus service to Hachimantai Shimokura Ski Resort (best for advanced+ skiers) , located just 5 minutes away
  • Bus service to Appi Ski Resort
  • Bus service to Morioka downtown

Appi Grand Hotel
At the base of Appi Kogen Ski Resort

The Appi Grand Hotel is the resort "jewel of north" in Tohoku. Featuring all the amenities one would expect from a high end western-style resort accommodation, this place has got it all; a swimming pool, a massive Onsen hot springs complex, multiple restaurants and even a wedding chapel if you happen to meet "the one" on the gondola.

  • Ski in/out to Appi Kogen Ski Resort
  • Activities for all ages; family friendly resort and hotel
  • Full service hotel with rental shop, hot springs, swimming pool, gym and multiple restaurants
  • Free shuttle to/from Morioka Station
  • If you have a rental car this is a great base to also ski Shimokura, and Hachimantai which within 30 minutes. Within 30-90 minutes is Iwate Kogen Snow Park, Amihari, Tazawako and Geto Kogen.

Daiwa Roynet Hotel

Located in downtown Morioka City

The Daiwa Roynet is situated in the heart of Morioka's active city center, while staying within 1-hour of 6 different ski hills. The hotel has all that one would need to stay comfortable but the main appeal is its proximity to restaurants, bars and nightlife that downtown has to offer. Best for the type of skier that enjoys adventure both on the slopes and off, the Roynet will put you the closest to an après scene in this region.
  • Comfortable business hotel with bigger rooms (by Japan standards)
  • Not a ski resort property so there are no skier-specific services such as rental skis
  • No in-hotel onsen
  • The restaurants, bars and nightlife of Morioka are just stepps away
  • With a rental car, this is a great base for skiing everything in the region. Within 60 minutes is Shimokura, Hachimantai, Shizukuishi, Amihari, Iwate Kogen Snow Park; and within 60-90 minutes is Geto Kogen and Tazawako.

Map of recommended accommodation in relation to nearby ski resorts

  • Ski Resorts are listed in blue ski icons.
  • Recommended accommodation is listed in red icons
  • Unless you're looking for a relaxing resort vacation based in one area, a guided trip or a rental car will open up significant access as most accommodation doesn't have enough public transportation to efficiently ski everything on offer in this region.
