Where to ski in northern Tohoku

Northern Tohoku has so many options it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your ski trip in this region:

• While Tohoku has a lot on offer, it's a bit spread out so a rental car or guided trip that includes transportation is recommended
  
• This region isn't as developed for tourists as other destinations like Niseko or Hakuba. This means most restaurants won't have English menus for example, but they will have plenty of authentically cultural adventures on offer for the willing visitor!
  
• If you're looking for a high end resort-type experience (imagine a cruise ship on a ski slope), this region has Appi Kogen on offer, but all the other ski hills are pretty basic with an emphasis on actually skiing rather than boutique shops or restaurants.
• When planning, note that hotels in this region don't usually get booked out during the ski season (New Years and Chinese New Years excepted) so you don't have to be limited to your hotel reservation and can move around with the snow forecast .
